Seven years in the making… I finally finished this nativity collage wall hanging kit that I ordered from Amazon. While I will be the first to admit that this is not my best work… It is decent enough to enjoy this Christmas. With two littles running around, having a real nativity scene really isn’t feasible. I don’t want to spend the whole season looking for baby Jesus is the strangest places. Hanging this nativity quilt will be a wonderful alternative.
The kit included precut squares and fabric for the appliqué pieces. I added the border, binding and backing. Instructions included a much larger nativity scene but I chose only to do the barn and holy family. This technically was my first detailed appliqué project and I really had no idea what I was doing. Since then I have learned some best practices that would have made it possible for me to make the whole nativity, wise men and shepherds included.
Truly what kept me from finishing was that I had no idea how to quilt it. Knowing that I was going to keep it for myself and this is my year to finish my closet of unfinished projects, I decided to try something new and quilted simple diagonal lines. The result… just enough quilting to catch the appliqué but not too much to be distracting. I am very happy with the effect. I get nervous doing quilting designs that don’t follow the pieced top… I’m afraid to detract from the main design of the quilt. In this case, it worked out well.
While this may have taken a LONG time to finish (OK… so this one spent a lot of time in the closet), I would recommend it to someone that liked the background effect of the small squares and wanted to have some fun with raw edge appliqué. It’s not for a beginner though, because of the many squares and small appliqué pieces.
