God's Workmanship: A Devotional Thought

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10, ESV

I do a lot of thinking when I'm working on a project. Many times I focus on the little imperfections of the quilt itself. I think that is a universal feeling to most quilters. We see the mistakes: the imperfect stitches, the off-set corners, the block out of place. That can happen to us in life too. We can look at the flaws in a moment or a day and feel that the whole of life is terrible. Just as we can get so bogged down in the details that we miss the beauty of the quilt itself, we can get lost in the chaos of the moment that we loose site of the beauty of life as a whole.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds me that God is my pattern designer. He has set before me the design, the fabrics, the instructions. He is by my side as I stitch together His inspiration. Just as I have to trust that what I'm doing will result in a beautiful quilt, I have to put all my trust in God's plan for my life. Easier said than done, but as I quilt my scrappy wedding ring quilt this week, I'm thoughtfully inspired that God's plan for my life is good and beautiful and I should continue to follow his lead even through the struggles I may face.
