The Value of a Quilt: A Devotional Thought

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9: 15

Many quilts are given as gifts. It might be the number one reason a quilt is made. A quilt is a valuable gift:

  • It's useful. Quilts are warm and perfect for cold days on the couch or your favorite chair, and they're just right for cold night bringing you comfort and warmth. Even in Texas I have quilts all over my house!

  • It's beautiful. Quilts come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There is just something about the geometry of a quilt that inspires beauty.

  • It's personal. The pattern and fabrics were chosen with the receiver in mind. This makes the quilt extremely personal and even more beautiful to the receiver.

  • It will last for generations. I have and have seen very old quilts that have held up extremely well. Quilts can take a beating and survive. I think it's all that love built up in the layers of fabric and batting.

Unfortunately, some people don't see the value in a handmade quilt. They know they can get a quilted blanket just about anywhere and expect that a handmade quilt is the same thing. They assume that all blankets are the same. They haven't experienced the value of a quilt.

The same can be said about God's indescribable gift to us... Jesus Christ. In 2 Corinthians, Paul lists for us some of the benefits of faith in God and his love for us. When we have a relationship with our Lord and share our faith with others, we are blessed in so many ways. Paul calls it an indescribable gift.

Just like some people undervalue a handmade quilt, we can find ourselves undervaluing God's gift to us. I know I'm guilty of sometimes looking at God's gift as if it were something the world provides...not seeing the true value, and treating it like some gimmick in this world. Thankfully God is loving, merciful and generous with his second chances. He gently shows us again and again the true value of His gifts, and, just like Paul, we can thank Him for his indescribable gift, of sending Jesus to this earth to be our savior. That is truly something to be thankful for!
