"Rainy Day" Plans: A Devotional Thought

Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. Deuteronomy 32:2

After a Tuesday downpour (more than five inches) I am stuck at home with another downpour of rain. The roads around our house are prone to flooding and the ground is very saturated. The likelihood of flooded roads is very high and I don't want to be caught in a flash flood!

All this rain has given me time to think about my next pattern... which will now be "Rainy Day". A selection of grays in a pattern inspired by the Irish chain design. It really fits with my mood recently... rainy days. For me, rainy days are relaxing... the sound of the rain on our metal roof, quieter inside activities (like quilting), and some extra time for cuddling and meditation. All those things are great reasons to make a rainy day quilt... and with rain on the mind... I was drawing a blank about the topic for my weekly devotional thought!

Then, I typed "rain" into the search box on bible.com... and came up with a whole new reason to make a rainy day quilt! It's amazing how just in the moment of need God provides something completely unexpected but exactly what is needed. This passage from Deuteronomy gives a wonderful picture of how we should recieve the word of God... like abundant rain on tender plants. It's that bright green grass you see only after a good rain storm.

Interestingly enough, this rain passage doesn't have anything to do with relaxing, but everything to do with actively receiving the teachings of the Lord. Plants have to work to soak up the water that falls, they have reach out with their roots to recieve the rain. Even a plant with the most abundant rain but a poor root system will die.

Sometimes learning from God's word is hard. The lesson maybe something that is hard to understand or maybe not what you or I want to recieve. The work of opening our hearts for these heavenly lessons can be difficult. Not a relaxing rainy day at all! But so, so important.

The "Rainy Day" quilt pattern will have a new story now... not only are rainy days a time to relax and get some extra sewing in, but also a time to remind us to soak up God's word and teachings like tender plants.
