God's Love for Us: A Devotional Thought

Updated: Oct 8, 2022

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9 ESV

One of my favorite things to do with a quilt is cuddle up on the couch or in bed with it wrapped around me. There's just something special about the warmth of the quilt that makes it so comforting. I'd like to think it's all the love the quilter puts into the quilt as she made it, slowly seeping out to provide comfort.

I have a quilt that I finished in a time of sadness and grief. The making of it helped me recover from my loss. Now, whenever I feel sad or just need a little extra comfort, I pull out the quilt I made and place it on my bed. It might be my imagination... but I sleep better those nights.

A quilt brings warmth and comfort, but it's not the soul-filling, complete comfort we sometimes seek, and always need. That comfort comes only from God. I sometimes like to think of God as a perfect quilt in this way: Wrapped around me with all his love to provide perfect comfort, strength and peace. At times we may have trouble finding it... like a quilt lost in a closet. 1 John 4:9 points to one way that we can "see" the love God has for us. Like looking at a quilt, we can look to the cross and see all the love that God poured into his plan to save us from sin and death... no matter the sin, God loves us, and his love never fades. A quilt might get torn, batting may come loose, or the edges become frayed, but God's love for us is forever and and always.
