5 Ways to Find Inspiration in Everyday Places

Inspiration is everywhere... I'd thought I'd share a little bit about how I find inspiration for my quilts and quilt patterns...

1. Life is an endless supply of inspiration...

my little helper asked for an orange quilt the other day... not the color orange... but an orange tree quilt. What?! She was real insistent on it, so I thought about it and came up with the pattern on the right in the picture. Orange fruit surrounded by tree leaves.

2. Take something and look at it differently...

For my orange tree quilt, instead of making a traditional tree shape I thought about some of the parts of a fruit tree... If you took a magnifying glass and looked at a tree up close, what would you see? Fruit and leaves. That's where I saw a pattern forming in my mind and I went with it.

3. Play with color.

I have a program I used to change around the colors in my quilt designs. It's also something I do in my head on occasion. For the rainy day quilt at right... I played with a lot of colors before I found the perfect combination of grays.

After many color trials, I settled on this set of grays for this quilt design.

4. Follow your favorite quilt designers on Facebook.

My feed is filled with inspiring people. I like seeing the colors and patterns they use. I see what works, what I like, and what I don't like. Sometimes I'm inspired to try a new color combination or new technique.

5. Look to nature.

A breath of fresh air can do the mind some good... as well as provide some inspiration for a new quilt. My Happy Little Tree pattern was inspired by all the oak trees on our property that provide homes for all the cardinals we have.

I hope I have inspired you to look for some inspiration in everyday places for your next quilt.

What's your favorite source of inspiration?
